Tues April 23 Photos

So, to the photos.
First our elevator. No only do we have a "-1" floor, we have a choice below that, to "infinity floor." Your guess is as good as mine.

All I know is I'm not going there.

Then driving up the NW coast of Sea of Galilee. I thought it would be all dry, desert, sandy brown, rocks exposed and not much green or grasses or trees.

That is a bit the case up in the hills. But along the Sea of Galilee it is green, trees, brown soil. Cool breeze off the Sea.

There's lots of agriculture.
Fields of planted trees.
Mango trees, banana plants, hay fields, olive trees.

Land of milk and honey, according to tour guide Adrian, was honey from dates not bees.

And there are fields and fields of date palms.

Mt of Beatitudes.
Sermon on the Mount.

He said:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
    for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst
 for righteousness,
    for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
    for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted
because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Mike looking out over the Mt of Beatitudes. It's a natural amplitheatre, now planted in banana plants.

Opening up downhill towards the Sea of Galilee.  Jesus might have stood near the shore, the natural amplification of sound would have carried his voice uphill quite far. Sitting on the hill, the view is spectacular.

Over the Sea, hills balancing the view on either side, but expansive enough to be breath- taking. Cool breeze wafting up from the Sea.

Could sit there all day and listen.

Clumps of small trees, bushes naturally.

Tabgha.
Another church. This north west short of Sea of Galilee is full of churches marking events in Jesus' life. Here is where he taught for 2 to 3 years.

Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes. Also confluence of 7 Springs. The rock under the altar is the rock on which this miracle happened, designated by St Helen, Constantine's mother, in 350 AD.

Also a neat Olive press from 2000 years ago. The top stone really moves, I tried it.

St. Peter's Church, which is right next to Capernaum. I mean, 1 minute bus ride. There's a pathway created in 2000 for people to walk between Christian sites on Sea of Galilee. Could do that, next time.

This is where Jesus appeared to Peter, James, John, Andrew after the resurrected. Ate breakfast on the beach where we sat (and where Mike is sitting in photo.)

John 21
Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee.

It happened this way: Simon Peter, Thomas, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together.  “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.

He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”
“No,” they answered.

He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!”

As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water.

The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards.

When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.

Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.”

So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn.

Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord.

Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish.

This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.

Capernaum. This was really cool. Peter's hometown. This, as with the other sites, were set up as monasteries. Well kept up, as religious sites.

The synagogue in Capernaum, where Mark says Jesus' taught.

You see Mike looking down into a rectangular room of stones. This is the base of the synagogue of Capernaum.

The stones on level with Mike are from the Roman times, built 150 AD on. The black basalt stones lower down are from the synagogue that Jesus spoke in, from his time period.

Then surrounding the synagogue you can see the black basalt walls of the homes of Capernaum. How cool is this! The homes are right next to each other, with narrow "streets." You can see the street going directly away from the synagogue.
The homes were 2 to 4 rooms each. In the second photo, you see about 5 homes in this photo. Peter's home, they believe, is under the "spaceship" church at the far end of the photo. Or rather, the spaceship church was built with a glass floor recently, over Peter's home.

The view of Sea of Galilee from Capernaum.

Looking back from Capernaum towards the Mt of the Beatitudes.

The River Jordan. Small. I know. As it enters the Sea of Galilee.  And some Israeli army vehicles. This spot is only about 20 miles from Syria. AHHH!

Adrian says Israel is so small, that this river would be a stream anywhere else.

The Sermon on the Mount would be a Sermon on a hill anywhere else.

Stopped for lunch at south point of Sea of Galilee.

Then to the Jesus Boat. Just discovered in 1986. A wooden fishing boat definitely from the time of Jesus. Not necessarily His, but like much we see, you get the idea.

It was moved, fragile thing that it was, by surrounding it with urethane foam, a Dow product!

Boat ride on Sea of Galilee.

You see the Mount of the Beatitudes to the left of the boat in this photo.

You can see the church above slightly to the right, the golden hay on the mound hill above the boat, and the natural amplitheatre planted in bananas flowing down to the shore to the left of the mound hill of hay.

. Lots of jokes, not going to walk on it.
 At least today.

Back in Tiberias. Loved today. Just loved it.
